Hero Homeschooling’s origin story will be familiar to many families.
A few years ago, the creators of the tutoring business’s grandson struggled to cope with mainstream education. His school struggled to cope with him and their lovely, bright boy became a shadow of himself. What their daughter did next opened their eyes.
Helen Yarnall, co-owner of Hero Homeschooling, says: ‘Our daughter took a leap of faith—a really big one—and educated her son herself. The change brought about in him was incredible and so wonderful to see. It reinforced how essential it is for a child to feel safe and work at their own pace in order to thrive and make progress.’
Their daughter’s experience made the couple want to offer their skills as experienced educators to the Mandurah homeschool community and help bring about the same change in others.
It inspired them to create Hero Homeschooling, a business aimed at providing primarily English and Maths courses to local homeschoolers. Units in Creative Writing and Mental Maths are proving particularly popular with 9-14 year olds, booking out within weeks of the business opening.
Based at Falcon eLibrary and Lakelands Library, Hero Homeschooling’s two main tutors are Helen and Rob Yarnall. Helen is a qualified high school English teacher and budding novelist. With over thirty years’ experience of teaching Year 7 to Year 12 students, she works both with children who find reading and writing a challenge to those studying English at ATAR level. Rob is an experienced primary school teacher who is also qualified to teach Mathematics at high school and support young people with learning needs. He is sport and computer mad and loves to incorporate those passions into his teaching.
The tutoring business offers small group courses that privilege personalised learning in a safe and welcoming environment. Its mission is to stimulate homeschoolers’ interest in English and Maths, teach skills or knowledge at the point of need, enable students to work at their own pace and encourage pursuit of individual interests.
Their calm and friendly approach, together with expert subject knowledge, is highly effective in helping young people make academic progress and develop confidence in their own ability.
As of 2023 there are 4 popular courses on the calendar.
